Triton forcing open a sea monster’s jaws is one of the best-known images among the Peterhof fountains. Here it appears on the cup together with the crowned monogram of Peter the Great, while the saucer carries gold turtles on blue and white rings.
The Peterhof Fountains series is by Olga Budashova, an artist at the Imperial Porcelain Factory. For each cup she picks one sculpture from the Peterhof palace and park ensemble outside St. Petersburg and redraws it in a stylized manner of her own, in gold against white bone china.
The shape is Eduard Krimmer’s thin-walled May, decorated with an overglaze decal and 22-karat gold trim. The cup holds 165 ml (5.6 fl oz) and is 7.7 cm (3 in) tall, and the saucer measures 12.1 cm (4.8 in) across.
Wash by hand. Not dishwasher or microwave safe. Each piece has the factory mark on the base. Made in St. Petersburg, Russia.
