Romeo and Juliet, from the Ballet series, decorates this coffee cup, saucer, and dessert plate on the May shape. The pieces are thin-walled bone china with a milky tone, made at the Imperial Porcelain Factory in St. Petersburg, and the decoration is an overglaze decal with 22-karat gold trim. The cup has a smooth glazed rim.
Measured to the brim, the cup’s capacity is 165 ml (5.6 fl oz); in use, expect up to 10–15% less. The cup is 7.7 cm (3 in) high, and the saucer 12.1 cm (4.8 in) in diameter.
Eduard Krimmer (1900–1974), who designed the shape, was an Honored Artist of the RSFSR and a laureate of the Repin State Prize of the RSFSR. He worked at the factory from 1950, and the first shape cast there in bone china was his May cup. The pattern is by Lyubov Tsvetkova (b. 1962), a painter and sculptor at the factory since 1994.
Because of the gold, wash by hand with a mild liquid detergent and a soft sponge; a dishwasher can dull or wear the gilding over time. Not for the microwave.
