Three pieces from the Ballet series carry The Nutcracker on the May shape: a coffee cup, a saucer, and a dessert plate. They are thin-walled bone china, made at the Imperial Porcelain Factory in St. Petersburg. The pattern is applied as an overglaze decal and trimmed in 22-karat gold, and the rim of the cup is smooth and glazed.
The cup’s 165 ml (5.6 fl oz) capacity is measured to the brim; in use it holds about 10–15% less. It is 7.7 cm (3 in) high, and the saucer is 12.1 cm (4.8 in) across. Bone china has a milky tone.
The pattern comes from Lyubov Tsvetkova (b. 1962), who has painted and sculpted porcelain at the factory since 1994. Eduard Krimmer (1900–1974), Honored Artist of the RSFSR and a pupil of Kazimir Malevich, was the sculptor behind the shape, and his May cup was the first shape to be cast in bone china.
Please wash by hand with a mild liquid detergent and a soft sponge: in a dishwasher the gold may dull or wear away over time. Not for microwave use.
